Individual counseling facilitates the exploration and resolution of personal problems and issues according to the needs of the individual. Individual counseling offers an opportunity to explore concerns in a safe and confidential environment. Some of the potential benefits of individual counseling are stated in the following points. Short term situations that become more easily addressed after a few meetings with a qualified therapist to develop some problem resolution strategies. At other times, the difficulties run deeper and have been painful for a longer period of time. Regardless of the duration or severity of your difficulty, counseling can play an important role in getting you to being productive and satisfied with your life. Things that may bring about the possibility of benefit from individual counseling may include situations like having an eating disorder, obsessions and compulsions, anger, anxiety, stress, alcohol and substance abuse, coping with HIV or other illnesses (with oneself or another), low self-esteem, conflicts with a domestic partner or family member, self-defeating or self-destructive behavior, thoughts of harming oneself or another, dealing with an abusive relationship, or sexual concerns.
Some couples need minor adjustments to get back on their feet and some need a major overhaul to save their relationship, marriage, or family. Some couples come to counseling to prevent problems from occurring in the future and some come to solve current problems or heal from past relationship wounds. Common areas that marriage counseling or couples therapy can help you with are: communication difficulties, intimacy problems, sexual issues, financial conflicts, decreased fun in the relationship, infidelity problems, domestic conflict/frequent fighting, blending family/step-family problems, parenting issues, anger issues, power/control problems, lack of mutual respect, career/work conflicts, and overall decreased satisfaction within the relationship.
The Private Practice of Dr. Patricia L. Pitts, PhD & Associates, A Psychological Corporation, offers various services to accommodate all couples, including pre-marital counseling for couples preparing to marry, couples therapy to resolve problems, manage stress, address depression and anxiety disorders, repair the relationship or take the relationship to a higher level, and preventative therapies to help prevent problems in the future
Group counseling involves a small group of people who meet together weekly, along with our trained clinician, to talk about their struggles and problems. These groups can take a variety of forms. Some focus on a specific topic or problem, while others address a number of different concerns. When people come into a group and interact with other group members, they tend to recreate those difficulties that brought them to counseling in the first place. The group process offers a rich opportunity to learn how to better effectively deal with one’s own issues, as well as, experientially learn how to relate skillfully in relationships with other group members.
Under the skilled direction of the group facilitators, the group is able to give support, offer alternatives, or gently confront an individual. In this way, the difficulty is resolved, alternative behaviors are learned, and the individual develops new social skills or ways of relating to people. Group counseling has been found to be a very effective means of treatment and, in some cases, the best form of treatment for a particular individual or a particular type of concern. In a group, you can learn more about how you are perceived by others, experience a sense of acceptance and belonging, discover that you are not alone in the difficulties you are experiencing, hear ideas from others which enhance your ability to make decisions and solve problems, benefit from the experience of being helpful to others, learn to constructively express your feelings and ideas to others, and gain encouragement by observing the successes of others.

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation may be necessary to diagnose any number of emotional, behavioral, or developmental disorders. An evaluation of an adolescent or adult is made based on behaviors present and in relation to physical, genetic, environmental, social, cognitive, emotional, and educational components that may be affected as a result of the behaviors presented.
Once a diagnosis is made, medication management may be warranted. Our psychiatrist will review with you the recommended medication, the reason for it and any possible side effects. Medication compliance is imperative. If you have any concerns or questions, the psychiatrist is available to address them. Often psychological treatment plays an important role while on medication. The medication can assist in shifting the biochemical issue; psychotherapy helps in finding effective tools to manage your emotions, relationships and life. In addition, family involvement can be valuable.
Many times, families, spouses, or friends are the first to suspect that their loved one is challenged by feelings, behaviors, and/or environmental conditions that cause them to act disruptive, rebellious, or sad. This may include, but is not limited to, problems with relationships with friends and/or family members, work, school, sleeping, eating, substance abuse, emotional expression, development, coping, attentiveness, and responsiveness. There are many times that treating the family is a vital part of an individuals road to recovery. Educating the family, teaching the family healthy relational skills and discovering effective ways to support can make a huge difference in the overall recovery of an individual. The family becomes the patient and the changes in the family impacts each member.
In addition to providing partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient eating disorders programs, we also provide outpatient services, such as, individual, couples, family, group and psychiatric care to those suffering with eating disorders. These outpatient services are offered independently of our programs. At times, individuals may seek individual outpatient services, and immediately or eventually, may need an intensive program. At other times individuals may graduate from an intensive outpatient program and continue in outpatient services to continue their therapy . In any event, we look at treating the individual at the level of care most appropriate for their biopsychosocial needs.
